Craigslist is a well-known site that offers several used cars. There are several important factors to consider when purchasing used cars. More help?
1. Exterior
The first thing to check is the exterior. All the panels must be free of dents and rust. Contrary to rust, minor scratches aren’t a problem. Wheel wells and side panels should be checked as well. All the doors, roof and trunk should be opened and shut.
2. Engine
If the engine is still cool, you should examine it. There is usually some dust and dirt. However, if you see oil on or under the car, this could indicate a more serious problem. Check also for a corroded car battery and loose wiring.
3. Tires & Wheels
The tread of both tires should show an equal amount. If the exterior of the vehicle is heavily worn, then the vehicle has probably been driven hard. The spare tire also needs to be in a good condition.
4. Windshield
It is important to check the windows and windscreen for any cracks. You may think that a small scratch is not a big deal, but you can still use it when negotiating for the price of the car. Keep in mind that cracks will get worse and cost more to repair over time.
5. Oil Filter Dipstick
Along with the fluid level, you should also check the engine oil. It should be a deep brown. If there are grayish or foamy oil or water in the dipstick, it could mean that the engine has a crack. The rag should not contain any metal pieces, as this could be a sign of a major problem.
6. Interior
The interior of a Craigslist used vehicle should be smelled for a musty scent, which may indicate that there is a leak. The leather on the seats and pedals must be in a good condition. Roofs shouldn’t be drooping down, and if a vehicle has a roof, the sunroof should open and close smoothly.
7. Safety Features
Be sure to test the safety features on the vehicle before you buy it. This includes the turn signal and the headlights. It is important to test the antilock brakes if they are installed on the vehicle. The muffler, horn and exhaust system must all be working properly.
8. Electrical Components
Many vehicles have a number of electronic parts. Automatic window and door locking should also work correctly. It is also important that the stereo works properly. It is also important to check any additional electrical features such as the car alarm and keyless entry.
9. Manufacturer’s Logo
The manufacturer’s emblem can be found on the driver-side door. There should be no signs of tampering. The VIN and date of the vehicle’s construction should be visible.
10. Heater Air Conditioner
To properly test the heaters and air conditioners, the engine must be warm. As soon as you switch on the air conditioner, it should start. If you notice that the A/C is broken, repair costs are high. Test the heater by using all speed settings. If the air being pushed is moist then this could be a sign that your heater core is having a leak.
